Description

So, I’ve got this 1980 Ford Escort 1600 Sport manual — RHD, imported from South Africa, all taxes and duties sorted. Got it registered in the UK and the Nova has been done, so it’s technically roadworthy now. Starts up fine, runs okay, and I’ve driven it around the industrial estate — not much, but it does move.

The body’s solid — export spec sport shell, front end has been reinforced a bit like our RS models. Inner wings, strut tops, rear arches are all original and in decent shape. Both front floors have been fixed, boot wells are repaired too. The front floors look presentable, though the boot wells could do with a tidy-up. The repairs were done with a rubberised coating that hardens over time — looks good, but I’ve seen a bit of wear.

Back end is where it starts to show a bit more. The outer floor panels where they meet the sills have some small holes — not big, just a bit of poking and you’ll see them. Gaps are mostly fine, but both doors are slightly out of alignment — they stick out a bit at the bottom, so they need a bit of adjustment. Paint’s not showroom perfect — definitely not a show queen — and the door strikers and bits have been painted over, which makes it look a bit lazy.

Mechanically, it’s a 1600 711M crossflow engine — starts easily and runs well. Might need tappet settings and carb tuning depending on the weather, especially in colder months. 5-speed gearbox, brakes and clutch are all working. Nothing fancy, but it’s reliable enough to drive short distances.

Interior’s decent — black headlining, dash has been recovered and is average. Seats are retouched with sport material from South Africa, still looks tidy. Door cards are okay, but the carpet is a mess — badly fitted, definitely needs replacing.

Wheels are banded steel — they’re not bad, just not what I’d pick for a modern setup. I’d go for alloys if I was building it up, but these are fine for a project.

This one’s more of a DIY project car — if you’re looking to get hands-on, it’s a good starting point. If you’re paying someone to do it, though, you might be better off with a more complete or newer model.

I’m happy for people to come see it — we’ve got a ramp so you can get underneath and check it out. Delivery’s possible if needed.

I’m based in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire — no rush, just happy to chat.

About us: We’ve got around 40 classic cars on the floor right now, mostly Fords. If something’s not in stock, we might be able to source it — just ask.
