1985 Austin Metro Vanden Plas
Description
So, I’ve been keeping this car for years — not because I needed it, but because it just feels right. It’s a 1985 Austin Metro Vanden Plas, the top-spec version, and honestly, it’s one of those cars that just stands out when you see it.I found it in a museum display at one point, which explains the care it’s been given to — the inside and out are clean, polished, and well-maintained. It’s been in display for a while, and that’s probably why it’s still so tidy. The chassis number is SAXXFZWD1AD518670, registration C345DVS, and the odometer says 67,466 — but the last 2000 miles were covered in just the last five years, so it’s been used sparingly.
It’s a manual, so it’s got the MG Metro engine — not the automatic, which makes it feel more alive, more responsive. The original parts are mostly there, but it’s got 13-inch Mg Metro alloys, which are a bit of a modern upgrade since the original wheels and tyres are long gone. The car also has a sporty exhaust that gives it a bit more character, though it still keeps the original back box and mud flaps — nice touches from the original owner.
Inside, it’s got a leather steering wheel, upgraded cloth seats, deep pile carpets, and wood trim on the doors. The interior feels solid, and the dashboard has a rev counter and a digital clock — not flashy, but practical. There are piles of receipts from 2003 onwards, and I’ve got photos from when it was restored around 2016/17 — full engine rebuild, new parts, all that.
It’s got a MOT due in September 2026, and I’ve kept it in good shape. I’ve been meaning to sell it for a while now — not because I don’t love it, but because I’m just looking for a new chapter.
It’s based in Leyburn, North Yorkshire, and I’m listing it for the September 2025 car auction. The price is £6,300, but I’m not going to say that in the title — that’s just the number.
I’ve been a fan of the Metro since I was young, and this one really holds up. If you’ve ever driven one and thought, “Wow, that’s a solid little car,” then this might be the one you’ve been looking for.
If you’re interested, you can check it out before the auction — I’m happy to show it around or send photos. Just let me know.
No warranty, obviously — it’s a classic, and classics have stories. But this one has a real one.
